Button is honored to have been named as one of 30 Best Small and Medium Workplaces in New York by Fortune Magazine for a fourth straight year.

To determine the list of finalists, Fortune partnered with the people analytics firm Great Place to Work¬Æ to analyze confidential feedback from 45,000 employees within the Tri-State area. Employees responded to survey questions asking them to describe the extent to which their organization creates a Great Place to Work For All™. These are companies committed to inclusion and ensuring all employees have opportunity to reach their full potential regardless of who they are or where they sit within the organization. The survey questions examined factors like employees' day-to-day experiences with trust, innovation, company values, and the effectiveness of leaders.

In the end, anonymous employee feedback and details about the programs and practices that make our workplace unique ultimately landed Button a place on this list amongst some incredible New York-based companies that we are so proud to share this honor with.

A remote-first company

Receiving news of this award has given us good reason to pause and reflect on the last 12 months—a lot has happened over a short period! This year has been marked by a mix of highs and lows that we could not have predicted, despite our best efforts to be diligent planners. For example, at the start of 2020, we were celebrating a move into a shiny, new office in lower Manhattan. Just a few months later, the office sits empty as we moved to 100% remote work in an effort to do our part to flatten the curve. Suddenly, we've found ourselves adapting to a new way of work and life in the midst of global pandemic. The word 'unprecedented' has often been used to describe the events of the last few months—for lack of a better word, we really are working our way through unprecedented challenges that have tested our strengths and have ultimately shown just how resilient Buttonians are.

Today marks four months as a 'remote-first' company. During each of the last four months, we've also run internal surveys using Culture Amp to gather anonymous employee feedback to help us understand our strengths and areas of opportunity to improve. On the positive side, employees have consistently reported that their managers are taking time to check in on how they're doing before turning the conversation to work, with responses to that particular question ranging from 86% - 92% favorable. Employees have also reported feeling as productive at home as they do in the office, with responses ranging 81% - 85% favorable. Many have commented that they feel even more productive working remotely. On the other hand, survey feedback has also shown us where we need to improve. For example, one area we've seen consistently decline is around social connection and well-being.

Improving remote work for our employees

After surveying, we've been holding smaller team-wide discussions to acknowledge the feedback, dive further into the issues that matter most to employees, and to collectively come up with solutions to address our challenges. We recognize that we have a lot to learn and a lot of work to do as we adjust to remote work, adapt to a quickly changing global and economic environment, and continue to chase our dreams as a fast-moving startup with an ambitious mission.

We will continue to survey and build initiatives around employee feedback because at the end of the day culture, morale, and engagement are incredibly important to us. This is a common theme and a uniting factor amongst all of the companies we're proud to stand beside on Fortune's list of best workplaces.

It should be said: This award belongs to all Buttonians—both current and former employees—to every person who has ever been a member of this team and has contributed to building our strong and vibrant culture. To you, we are grateful, and so proud to share this honor.
